How it all started
Nice to meet you!
My name is Emma. I'm 30 years old, and I started learning about personal finance 2 years ago. I’m a student (went back to school at 29!) and a part-time freelancer. Like many others, I had a financial awakening during the peak of the COVID pandemic. With rising prices and interest rates, I realized my financial situation was worse than ever. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get ahead. Bills kept coming, and there seemed to be no way out. I was in a ton of debt (close to $50K), and I was afraid. I’d never been in this situation before, and I was ready to do anything. I needed a change.
So, I started reading blogs, listening to podcasts, buying books, and doing everything I could to learn the basics of financial literacy. The first thing I realized was that it wasn't normal that I was never taught this kind of stuff. I went to university, and never in my education, from elementary school to my master's, did I learn about managing money. I took it upon myself to change that narrative and learned a lot.
This is how I came to create The Money New B. As a money newbie myself, I know there are many young women my age in the same financial situation, looking for a change. I wanted to share everything I learned and hopefully help people get better with money and take control of their lives.
I still have a lot to learn, but I want to share my journey with you and hope it can help yours too. Since 2023, I have been able to save for a 3-month emergency fund and pay back half my debt. I plan to pay the rest before August 2025. I will tell you all about it and do monthly breakdowns to share my progress.
In the meantime, let’s get to work!
